Behind every great photo is a story—and behind every story is the gear that made it possible. As travel photographers and storytellers, we’re often asked about the tools we use to capture the world through our Wanderlens. For us, the Canon R6 has been a game-changer, offering the perfect balance of performance and portability. But the real magic lies in our trio of Canon RF L-series zoom lenses: the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L, and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L. Each lens has its own superpower, allowing us to seamlessly transition from sweeping landscapes to intimate portraits and everything in between. In this post, we’re breaking down how we use these lenses, why we love them, and how they help us bring our travel stories to life.

Why We Chose the Canon R6:

When it came time to upgrade our camera, the Canon R6 stood out as the perfect choice for our travel photography and storytelling. Its exceptional low-light performance allows us to capture stunning images in challenging conditions, from dimly lit city streets to golden-hour landscapes. The R6 is incredibly versatile, making it a great all-around camera for everything from fast-paced action shots to serene portraits. We also love the peace of mind that comes with dual SD card slots, ensuring our photos are always backed up on the go. Add in its in-body image stabilization (IBIS), which works seamlessly with our RF lenses for razor-sharp shots, and you’ve got a powerhouse of a camera. Despite its professional-grade features, the R6 remains relatively affordable compared to other full-frame mirrorless options. Combine that with its 20.1MP sensor, which delivers incredible image quality and dynamic range, and it’s easy to see why the R6 has become our go-to tool for capturing the world.

To help you see the differences in background compression and image composition, I’ve posted sample photos taken with each lens. All shots were captured at the same aperture but at varying focal lengths, starting from the same position. This way, you can compare how each lens performs and how the focal range impacts the final image.

The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L: Our Go-To Wide-Angle Lens

If there’s one lens that never leaves our bag, it’s the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L. This ultra-wide-angle zoom is an absolute workhorse for travel photography, allowing us to capture expansive landscapes, towering architecture, and immersive environmental portraits—all with stunning clarity and minimal distortion. The fast f/2.8 aperture is a game-changer in low-light situations, whether we’re shooting the Milky Way under a dark sky or a cozy café interior. Paired with the Canon R6’s in-body stabilization, this lens delivers tack-sharp images even when shooting handheld. Its rugged build and weather sealing make it a reliable companion for adventures in all kinds of conditions. For us, the 15-35mm is the perfect lens for telling the big-picture stories of the places we visit, and it’s often the first lens we reach for when we want to capture the grandeur of a new destination.

Canon R6:
